Hanging out

Fun things to do in the capital

Over the centuries, Delhi has welcomed visitors from all over the world. Some liked it so much, they decided to make it their home too. Delhi has seen the rise and fall of seven such cities. So there are a lot of tombs and monuments left behind for today's visitor to see. If short on time, take a conducted tour for a general view of the capital's history. Other than the requisite sight seeing expeditions, you can go shopping, eat out, or simply hang out. For the ultimate hanging out experience, read on.

ART GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS

Other than the government run national galleries and museums, there are many private galleries scattered all over the city. We have a listing of these.

MARKETS

There are a few market areas, different from the usual shopping areas that make for interesting wandering.

Old Delhi: In and around the Red Fort and Chandni Chowk, are crowded bazaars waiting to be explored.

Dilli Haat: It has a collection of stalls put up by craftsmen from all over the country. Their wares include traditional clothes, jewellery, footwear, furniture, bed linen and other household items. The Haat is a wonderful place to taste the varied cuisine of all Indian states. The Haat is on Aurobindo Marg (opposite INA Market).

WALKING IN PARKS

Pleasant gardens or parks surround most of the ancient and modern monuments in the city. In today's traffic clogged capital, they make delightful lung spaces. The parks are safe in the day, but don't interact with strangers beyond common courtesies.

AMUSEMENT ARCADES

Delhi has a number of arcades that offer bowling, pool, and video games. But keep away from betting in these places. Betting here is illegal, and if you play for a wager (against our advice), watch out for sharks. Newman and Cruise could learn something from them.

PUBBING

All the bigger hotels in Delhi have a bar or pub attached. Usually open from 1100-2300, they serve drinks and snacks.

DISCOS

The discos here are mostly attached to hotels or resorts. Most allow only couples, but on some nights of the week, entry is free for ladies.

ALTERNATE ENTERTAINMENT
Delhi's official 'red-light' district is at GB Road, now renamed Swami Shraddhanand Marg. Prostitution exists in other areas too, but under the surface. We have no idea where you might find Delhi's many male and female 'escorts,' but apparently there are people who will provide this information if you ask around.
