70km roads to be dug up

Hyderabad Sept. 25:
Motorists, who are already bearing the brunt of bad roads, will have to face even worse conditions in the next one month. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) will dig up 70-km of the main roads and other streets in the core city. The main corridors of Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Khairatabad, SR Nagar, Basheerbagh, Liberty, Himayatnagar, Narayanaguda, Lakdikapul, Gun Foundry, Begum Bazaar, Bazaar Ghat, Habeebnagar, Karwan, Afzalgunj, Somajiguda and Srinagar Colony will be dug up immediately after Id-ul-Fitr (Ramzan festival). The board got the permission from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. Officials, however, claimed that they will try to minimise the inconvenience to citizens by carrying out the digging work at night.

“Road cutting is inevitable as the new rider trunk water pipelines have to be laid and connected to the existing distribution network for resuming daily water supply to 5.5 lakh connections in the core city in November. Besides, even the existing pipelines need to be strengthened and improved to increase the water carrying capacity,” the managing director of the water board, Mr Asok Kumar, said. In a smart move to avoid public wrath, the water board has decided to pay road restoration charges to the GHMC.

“Our expertise is in digging up and laying water pipelines. We will pay money to the civic body to repair the roads,” Mr Kumar added. The GHMC commissioner, Mr S.P. Singh, said the water board has been given the nod to cut roads. “The permission has been given in the larger interest of the citizens. The project is being taken for resuming daily drinking water supply to the citizens of the core city,” Mr Singh added. The GHMC has asked the board to start digging operations after 9 pm and close it early in the morning.

The board has also been directed to put up display boards with work details and likely benefits, caution boards, proper lighting for the convenience of the public. “I have asked the water board officials and the GHMC officers to co-ordinate properly and take up all safety measures,” he added.
