Internet is the key engine for India's growth: Intel CEO
Bangalore, Aug 3: World's largest chip maker Intel Corporation President and Chief Executive Officer Craig Barrett today said internet was the key engine for India's growth and exhorted the Indian government and industry to expand their internet infrastructure aggressively to gain competitive edge in the region.
Delivering a key note address on ''investing in the digital world'' at a meeting of technology and business leaders here, he said the sooner every company adopted doing business over the internet, the faster the acceleration of India's growth opportunities. ''India's businesses have the opportunity to increase their productivity, broaden their customer base and develop greater efficiencies within all aspects of their organisations.'' he added.
He said India's step towards to privatisation and investment in a fibre backbone was creating a viable telecommunication infrastructure. While the government was taking right developmental steps, the Indian businesses should use this infrastructure to take advantage of new growth opportunities, he suggested. Industries, which innovated by increasing their digital capacity and embracing the concept of e-Business were building a foundation for productivity and competitive gains, he added.
Dr Barrett said India had already established itself as a world leader in software development and there was an opportunity to repeat the success in IT-enabled services and Internet applications. He suggested early investment in these areas to help India emerge as a global quality service provider. Indian software industry would benefit from focusing on software development around open architecture and standards, he added.
Citing a research report on India's telecommunications bandwidth, he said the anticipation was a ten fold increase by 2004. This combined with 30 million internet users expected in the same year might lead India to be the largest and best-equipped internet base in Asia giving it a considerable e-Business advantage, he felt. He described the rapid availability of digital capabilities through ou the world and how Intel's leadership and innovation in silicon manufacturing, digital computing and communications architectures had helped drive this trend. ''
The Internet runs on silicon and we will continue to bring our technical and manufacturing expertise and our focus on volume economics and standards to help speed the internet build-out throughout India.'' Intel provided a unique technology foundation upon which the industry could innovate, grow and prosper, he added. Mr Barrett previewed the direction of computing and communications for the Internet by showing a short film demonstrating the transmission of high definition broadcast video cover an IP network and scaling video created on a personal computer to wireless handheld devices.
