Bloggers try to change Azamgarh's sullied image

Thursday, September 25, 2008, (Azamgarh (Uttar Pradesh))
Azamgarh is a town now firmly on the terror radar and personified by the faces of educated young men who formed part of the terror module that executed the Delhi serial blasts.

Saquib, who hailed from Azamgarh was pursuing an MBA degree in Delhi when he was arrested.

Zeeshan, also an Azamgarh boy, had also signed up for an MBA degree with a Delhi institute.

And Atif the alleged mastermind with his roots in Azamgarh, was taking a human rights course when the police caught up with him. (Watch)

Azamgarh in eastern Uttar Pradesh was once ironically known for its scholarly tradition. But now its ugly underbelly has been exposed.

Now bloggers from Azamgarh talk about how they want to change this emerging image. All of them are engineers from Azamgarh who are putting their best foot forward for their hometown, trying to set the pace for development and give their hometown a respectable face.

On an Orkut community, Asif who now lives in Abu Dhabi says he would like to open an engineering college in Azamgarh. He posted it on the site just two days ago.

It's a sentiment echoed by Mrs Trivedi who sensed the need to educate the youth of Azamgarh 12 months ago. An engineer herself, she feels other professionals like her should give the youth of the town constructive goals.

Rahul, a young man from Azamgarh says he would like to be a part of setting up industries in his hometown so that young people don't feel the need to migrate.

And there's Deepak Chaturvedi who feels that opening a food chain would hopefully set off a larger, more positive chain reaction among the people.

But with the police still cracking down on the town for more terror suspects, it will be a while before Azamgarh shakes off its terror tag.
